"I sat and I closed my eyes... I followed that ringing sound, the sound of silence..."
The spectator makes a wish and sets a piece of paper on fire. As the paper burns, it levitates up into the air and turns into ashes. The magician covers his hands over the ashes and transforms the ashes into a beautiful piece of crystal.
As magicians, we create experiences of magic for the spectator using various methods of deception, but is it possible to create an experience that feels truly magical, not just to the spectator but also to ourselves?
“Look where you want them to look. See what you want them to see.” — John Ramsay
Knowing and really understanding the power of your words can transform the impact your work has on the audience.
The spectator gains the power of a mind reader OR The spectator predicts another spectator’s actions OR The magician influences the spectator’s decisions.
A demonstration of telepathy using a deck of cards
Did you look at the paper?
An exploration of free will in which not only does the performer predict the choice of a random object, but also a word freely chosen by the spectator.
An experiment in Extra Sensory Perception
A thought-of card travels invisibly from the spectator’s hands into the hands of the magician.
Really, did you look at the paper?
A powerful prediction that involves the whole audience in an experiment of chance and choice, performed in a way that seemingly precludes the notion of any influence from the magician. The object of prediction is given away as a special gift to the participant.
A card prediction effect with a shocking serial number ending using a borrowed bill.
A time-traveller calls a cab
The pack cuts itself and causes the spectator’s selection to shoot out of the deck in an ultra clean way.
The magician introduces two imaginary coins — one silver and one gold. The spectator is invited to place one into the magician’s hand (e.g. silver) and the other into their own pocket (e.g. gold). With a snap of the fingers, the magician turns imagination into reality: the magician’s previously empty hand now holds a silver coin, and the spectator reaches into their pocket to find a chocolate gold coin!
What do you do after each of your performances?
A signed card is placed inside an envelope. The envelope is burnt, and the signed card reappears inside a brand new sealed deck of cards.
The future is predicted

Ting Chen

In 2017, Ting Chen founded China’s first Magic Bar — The Blackstone Magic Bar. This was an intimate theatre that redefined how magic is presented in China, a unique space that showcased some of the best talents in mystery entertainment. THE NEAT REVIEW created a striking brand identity for Ting, and co-created, designed, edited and published the first book of his work, "Reality Is Magic," in 2023. This work led Ting to a world tour, performing in over 18 cities, delivering lectures, and crafting immersive experiences for festivals and one-of-a-kind events.

Alexander Hansford founded THE NEAT REVIEW in 2019, after printing a string of limited-run artist books to accompany talks he was giving to magicians worldwide. Across a 14-country lecture tour, from Vienna & Sydney to Beirut & Los Angeles, his books were met with a unique reverence by the magic community. Alexander's long-running collaboration with Derren Brown spans Derren's live theatre shows, including Olivier Award-winning “Underground,” “Secret” and “Showman,” to consulting on the card magic pieces for Derren's “Only Human,” which comes to London’s West-End in late-2026.
